Signature Sound
Featuring some of New York’s most sought-after musical talent, Percussia delivers a captivating experience that transcends the sum of its considerable parts. Forged from a unique combination of percussion, flute, harp, and viola, the group’s signature sound seamlessly blends rhythmic vitality with melodic beauty to create something truly distinctive.
Committed to innovation, Percussia shines a spotlight on original commissions and world premieres, focusing on collaborations with New York-based composers. While programs like Drums Around the World and Shopping Cart Percussion explore the dynamic percussive elements of the ensemble’s repertoire, others—such as the Plucked & Struck duo for Celtic harp and micro-percussion—highlight intimate collaborations among individual members.
Percussia further expands its sonic palette by having guest artists collaborate on special projects. Soprano Melissa Fogarty’s talents, for instance, are showcased on both of Percussia’s releases for the Neuma label; while additional percussionists such as Bill Ruyle and Yousif Sheronick are invited to join the ensemble for rhythm-forward programs like Drums Around the World.
From the Concert Hall to the Community
Though Percussia is no stranger to traditional classical venues, its core mission of bringing modern music to underserved audiences has led it to embrace vibrant community-based performance spaces across its home borough of Queens (aka “The World’s Borough”) and surrounding areas. Capturing Percussia’s genius for bringing art to unexpected places, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman’s “In Jackson Heights” featured a performance by the ensemble at the JH Laundromat, where patrons enjoyed a live musical performance as they went about their chores.
Percussia has partnered with organizations ranging from the Queens Library and MakeMusicNY to ChaShaMa, Music for Autism, and the New York City Department of Transportation. The ensemble has worked with local businesses such as the La Boulangerie bakery, the Espresso 77 cafe, and the Falchi Building office tower to spread its musical message. It has even held an album release party at Maple Grove Cemetery, a hidden gem in Queens that invites audiences to enjoy live musical performances in a stunning hall with views of immaculately manicured grounds.
Championing artistic excellence together with inclusion and accessibility, Percussia welcomes everyone to experience the joy of live music.
